Waphyto founder Atsuko Morita, is a plant scientist and phytotherapist, born and raised in Japan. When she developed asthma during the course of her professional life as a flight attendant, along with dry skin and hair, Atsuko turned to a French friend, who recommended phytotherapy techniques.
Using phytotherapeutic products, Atsuko noticed that the symptoms of her asthma gradually dissipated and she began to experience numerous benefits. She left her airline career permanently to study phytotherapy and botanical therapy, methods that were still unfamiliar to Japan at the time, and attended Université de Paris in France.
Through her research of pharmacology and cosmetics, Atsuko began to realize the transformative power of plants. After discovering that botanical therapy could support health and wellness from the inside as well as the outside, she began developing a series of plant-based beauty products that could be used throughout a lifetime. Waphyto was born.
Waphyto may be a brand focused on beauty, but its roots are in scientific knowledge. Derived from French phytotherapy and using extraordinary raw materials from Japan, we’ve fused traditional herbology with scientifically proven phytotherapeutic techniques to create our uniquely holistic products. The result is high-quality products that support high-quality health and beauty.
Atsuko’s lifelong research led her to not only the creation of Waphyto but also to award-winning scientific achievements. Her studies of gene editing, plant properties and functional ingredients led her to discovery of a defensive plant secretion called biophytoalexin, which plants use to protect themselves.
Atsuko’s studies include not just plants, but geology - particularly the qualities of the soil plants grow in. She believes that studying the soil and environment produces higher-quality plants and higher-quality ingredients.
Japanese soil, created by millennia of volcanic eruptions and geologic interactions with mineral-rich hot springs, is extremely nutrient-rich. Understanding the special geography of Aichi and East Mikawa on the Central Tectonic Line, Atsuko has chosen to base her business in an area with the perfect conditions for producing some of the finest ingredients on earth.
